Title:
A Scientific Career Across Academia, Biotech, and Pharma: Perspectives, Trade‑offs, and Lessons Learned
Abstract:
Academia, biotech, and the pharmaceutical industry all rely on rigorous science, but they pursue fundamentally different objectives. While a strong scientific mindset is essential in all these environments, the motivations, constraints, timelines, and definitions of success can differ substantially and shape how research is conceived, executed, and evaluated.
In this talk, I will reflect on my career in computational chemistry across academia and biotech, as well as my current experience in a large pharmaceutical company. Using specific case studies, projects, and personal experiences, I will discuss similarities and differences in day‑to‑day research, collaboration, and career development, along with both expected and unexpected challenges, and the rewards and frustrations encountered along the way. The goal is to provide early‑career scientists with an honest, experience‑based perspective on different career paths and to help them consider how their skills and motivations align with different scientific environments.
